The VR Van
2016-2019, designing Global Friendship infrastrucrtures
The Virtual Reality Van was a mobile think tank for Global Friendship, existing in both physical and virtual space. The core activity of the VR Van were Global Friendship Workshops - speculative future-focused design sessions aimed to propose Global Friendship solutions and visualize them using VR technologies.
The project emerged during an art residency at the University of New Mexico, then expanded to New York, California, Nevada and finally went global after a series of events in Russia and Indonesia. The workshop begins with discussing some global issues and deciding which of them participants want to address, organizing into groups of particular interest to brainstorm and develop a specific solution. Then we would use a special 360 stop-motion animation kit to visualize those ideas. The kit enabled anyone create 360 experiences and learn the core concepts of VR technologies, not depending on any prior skills .
